The tour runs through the town of Nienburg/Weser and the joint municipality of Heemsen. A connecting route offers the possibility of shortening and riding two loops (northern route approx. 31 km, southern route approx. 21 km). You can start from anywhere. One possible starting point is the Lower Saxony Asparagus Museum in Nienburg.
The asparagus fields dominate the landscape from as early as March, and even after the harvest they can be recognized by the green plants with the red berries well into the autumn. Along the route through the flat Wesermarsch, eight information boards provide information about the asparagus plant, its origin, cultivation and harvesting, medicinal properties, its status as a luxury vegetable, food culture and the importance of asparagus for the Nienburg region. The route is signposted with the "Nienburg Asparagus" logo.
Interesting places lie along the way: Heemsen with its church, Anderten, the asparagus village of Haßbergen with the old chapel, Rohrsen, Drakenburg with the old village, the church, the Weser Renaissance gate arch and the Weser weir and, of course, the district town of Nienburg/Weser, the economic and cultural center of the Middle Weser region. There is an interesting museum landscape and a beautiful old town with historic half-timbered and Weser Renaissance buildings. Retail stores, restaurants and cafés invite you to linger.
Nienburg Asparagus and Lower Saxony Asparagus MuseumLower Saxony is asparagus country. The state ranks first in Germany with a cultivation area of around 4,500 hectares. Around 1,000 hectares of asparagus are grown in the Nienburg/Weser district. During the harvest period from April to June, "the scent of spring in spears", as the vegetable is often poetically described, plays an important economic role in the region. Nienburg asparagus is identified by a logo. This word and figurative mark is registered and protected by the German Patent Office.
The extensive "Burgdorf Asparagus Collection" is in the care of the Nienburg/Weser Museum as a permanent loan from the Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation. The asparagus museum is located in the Biedermeier garden at the Quaet-Faslem-Haus in Leinstraße 4. It is housed in the so-called Rauchhaus, a small Lower Saxony hall house from the 17th century. The Lower Saxony Asparagus Museum was established here in 2005.
Under the motto "From the field to the plate", visitors can find out everything worth knowing about modern asparagus cultivation in the outdoor area. Inside the museum, the focus is on the food culture surrounding the noble vegetable and beautiful tableware.
A lot of space is dedicated to young guests. There's an asparagus trunk to crawl into, an interactive tractor and lots of playful asparagus knowledge for kids and the young at heart to discover.
