Bovenden

The village of Bovenden is situated in a scenic location in the Leinebergland region just outside the city of Göttingen on the course of the German Fairy Tale Route.

The surrounding Leine valley and Plessforst forest offer visitors many different leisure activities in woods and fields. Above the hamlet of Bovenden, the striking Plesse Castle rises on a rock of light shell limestone and is a popular and legendary excursion destination in the region.

Bovenden for friends of fairy tails

It is no coincidence that the village of Bovenden with Plesse Castle has been a member of the "German Fairy Tale Route Association” for 40 years. The "German Legends" collection published by the brothers Grimm includes two of the 20 known Plesse legends: "The Silent People of Plesse" and "The Swan Rings of Plesse". The Grimm brothers also visited nearby Plesse Castle at the latest during their time at the University of Göttingen (1829-1837).

In her capacity as a Bovender symbolic figure in connection with the German Fairy Tale Route, "Adelheid von Plesse" represents a noble woman who lived in Plesse Castle around 1200. During, varied guided fairytale tours, "Adelheid von Plesse" will introduce you to the castle and its history.

Bovenden historical tidbits

Plesse Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1015. Until 1660 it served as residence for the noblemen of Plesse. The dominion of Plesse was temporarily transferred to the Hessian Landgraves and was added to the Guelph territory at the Congress of Vienna in 1816. J. W. von Goethe was a guest at the castle in the late summer of 1801 and rested with his companions under a lime tree whose new offshoot still bears his name today.
