Museum Steinau ...das Museum an der Straße
The former Amtsscheune is located in the Amtshof Steinau, a romantic courtyard complex. Since 2006, it has been home to Germany's only museum dedicated to the old Frankfurt-Leipzig trade route. In earlier times, the barn belonged to the Amtshaus. The bailiff Grimm and his family, including the later world-famous brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, lived in the barn from 1791-1796.
The original ladder that the Grimm siblings climbed up and down can still be seen in the barn today. The barn was one of the Grimm children's favourite playgrounds.
The barrier-free museum shows the role of the town of Steinau as a typical station on the important Frankfurt-Leipzig trade route, which formed the major west-east axis of the empire for many centuries. Incidentally, the town owes its nickname "on the road" to this road.
The dangers of travelling in those days are presented in an impressive and interactive way. Old inn signs, a historic coach from the Romeiser coach factory in Steinau and historic boundary stones tell the story of travelling in the past.
One section of the museum is specifically dedicated to the pottery trade from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century, whose products were sold along the road as far as Saxony and Westphalia. Incidentally, there are still potteries in Steinau that can be visited today.
