Museum Brothers Grimm House Steinau
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were six and five years old respectively when they moved to Steinau in 1791 with their parents and siblings (1562). The father Philipp Wilhelm Grimm, himself born in Steinau in 1751, had been transferred here and now held the position of landgrave bailiff. The former office building is a splendid half-timbered building, embedded in a picturesque courtyard.
The Brothers Grimm House Museum has been set up in their former home since 1998. With modern and interactive means, the life of the Grimm family in the Kinzigtal as well as the scientific work and the fairy tales of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are presented in an appealing way.
A separate department is dedicated to the artistic work of her youngest brother and well-known painter Ludwig Emil Grimm. In the Grimms' autobiographies you can read how much the Brothers Grimm have fond memories of their childhood and youth in Steinau.
