Bad Oeynhausen - Health spa with enchanting spa garden

The therapeutic spa Bad Oeynhausen lies between the Teutoburg Forest and Weser highlands on the confluence of the Weser and Werra rivers. The popular resort town looks back on a long tradition as a health resort with healing thermal springs. The lively spa town on the German Fairy Tale Route not only offers a modern health centre but also numerous leisure and recreational activities for holiday tourists and day visitors. A visit to the German Fairy Tale and Weser Legend Museum should be on the programme as well as a stroll through the picturesque spa garden, a time out in the Balinese Fairy Tale World of the Bali Thermal Spa or an excursion into the fantasy worlds of the GOP Varieté theatre.

Bad Oeynhausen for friends of fairy tales

Bad Oeynhausen has an enchanting history of its founding. It's said that back in 1745, Colon Sültemeyer was startled by the salty crust on his pigs, which had previously rolled about in the mud. As a consequence, the construction of a salt works was started, and the first step taken on the path to creating one of the most popular spas in the Prussian Kingdom. The Sültemeyer fountain (“Swine fountain“) in the centre of Bad Oeynhausen recalls this legend today.

In one of the most beautiful villas in the picturesque spa garden not even 200 meters away, the German Fairy Tale and Weser Legend Museum opened in 1973. The museum leads one into the world of fairy tales, myths and legends. It was founded by the author Karl Paetow, who published “The most beautiful Weser legends". The museum is oriented to cultural history, and presents the Brothers Grimm and other fairy tale collectors and known fairy tale authors. One learns about what these stories are about and how one distinguishes between fairy tales, legends, tales and fables. Special exhibitions give deeper insights into many aspects of fairy tales and legends. The storytelling circle of the Museum meets regularly in order to practice the exciting recounting of fairy tales, and invites the public to particular fairy tale storytelling evenings. Fairytale strolls through the magical spa garden from April to October supplement the enchanting offering. Princess festivals and Knight gatherings can likewise be booked for enchanting children birthdays, as well as fairytale sessions for groups of every age.

Bad Oeynhausener Historical Tidbits

The city founding legend recounts that the farmer Sültemeyer, thanks to his swine, discovered that the mud source contained brine. The so-called swine fountain in the middle in the Klosterstraße was erected in his honour. It has developed into a popular meeting place for young and old. The legendary Colon Sültemeyer also appears personally at many festivals, dressed in the traditional Minden-Ravensberger costume of the 18th century.
