The legendary Köterberg

Short facts

  • Lügde

A mountain full of fairy tales

The Lügder Köterberg is a truly fabulous place. Wilhelm Grimm, one of the two famous Brothers Grimm, hiked it in 1814 and reported: "Of course, many legends were linked to him and were preserved through him". He was told about a shepherd who found the entrance to the treasure chamber in the mountain with the help of a spring root as a key, and the fairy tale of the three little birds. These legends then found a place in the brothers' collection of legends and fairy tales.

Today the Köterberg is above all a popular destination for hikers and motorcyclists. From its 496 m high summit there is a breathtaking panoramic view of the Teutoburg Forest and the Weser Uplands. You can also follow the course of the German Fairy Tale Route here and, in good weather, look up to the Hercules in Kassel.
