Heilbad Heiligenstadt - the spa town in the Green Heart of Germany

Discover a fascinating health and holiday region right in the centre of Germany – situated on the German Fairy Tale Route - on the green belt at the intersection of Thuringia, Hesse and Lower Saxony. Heiligenstadt is the historical capital of the Eichsfeld region and combines everything that makes this area so special: historical customs, buildings from different stylistic periods in a beautiful small town and a wonderfully hilly environment. Immerse yourself in the history, art and culture of the town and let yourself be enchanted by the charm of times past.

Heiligenstadt spa for friends of fairy tales

This is where the Grimm brothers met in April 1838 for their last discussion before beginning to work on the German Dictionary. Heilbad Heiligenstadt has a heart for children. A lovingly designed fairytale park, embedded in an enchanting landscape on the northern edge of the town, right next to the Vitalpark, makes children's hearts beat faster. Meet the fairytale figures of the Brothers Grimm and embark on an adventurous journey through the world of fairy tales. A treading pool suitable for children and a brine spa facility also invite adults to rest and relax. Health that is also good fun! Every year on the first Sunday in July, the big fairytale park festival is celebrated, when everything revolves around the fairytale characters and their stories. A colourful programme awaits guests on and off stage on this Sunday.

Within the walls of the historic old town you can find many enchanting places, and not far from the town, to the west, you can marvel at the kingdom of the dwarves between natural sandstone rocks.

Heiligenstadt holiday tourists and day visitors

The Heiligenstadt health spa offers many possibilities to make your visit worthwhile. Enjoy beautiful views on your hiking tours in the centre of Germany, whether on pilgrim paths, to the Devil's Pulpit or on the nature park path "Leine-Werra", passing fairytale castles on mountain heights and former monasteries in quiet forest valleys. With numerous certified and "dream tour" marked routes, the extensive network of hiking trails in Eichsfeld leaves nothing to be desired. Right in the middle of it all, in the green heart of Germany, experience, relax, and take a deep breath – simply wonderful!

Heiligenstadt Historical Tidbits

The more than thousand years old spa town of Heiligenstadt is a particularly friendly gem of a place, and for this reason it can list a number of famous inhabitants and guests: Theodor Storm, the wood carver Tilman Riemenschneider, Heinrich Heine and the Brothers Grimm have all left their mark here.

Take the poet Theodor Storm at his word: " Just come here once and know indeed how lovely it is to live here". Nothing has changed in Storm's assessment to this day.
