Kaufungen
Fantastic things:
Kaufungen lies in the eastern part of the Kassel basin bordering gentle slopes of the Kaufungen forest and the Söhre. Its history dates back to 1017 in the Oberkaufungen neighbourhood where Emperor Henry II and his wife Kunigunde founded a Benedictine monastery. The abbey church was consecrated in 1025 and remains an iconic landmark today. It is also an atmospheric venue for open-air performances, and the sophisticated concert series there has attracted national attention.
Enchanting places:
Explore the grounds of Hesse's oldest foundation, the charity foundation Ritterschaftliches Stift:
See the historic abbey church, St.George's chapel, the manor house, winery house, tithing barn and counting quarters.
Alte Schule: The regional museum historically documents village life, providing a picture of living and working from the Middle Ages to the present. Special exhibits may be featured.
Rossgang, the mining museum: A rare monument to mining construction and technology is the 19th century capstan, a horse capstan used to raise brown coal. Also on display are reconstructed mine works for extracting alum in medieval times.
