Gudensberg
Fantas
tic things:
You may reach Gudensberg in a number of ways. If you are really in a hurry, you may get there via Autobahn 49; if you have a little more time, take National Highway B 254 and the smaller country roads, and if you are on bicycle, you may reach the city through an extensive network of good bike routes!
Upon your arrival, you will first be struck by castle hill with the ruins of Obernburg next to the Wenigenburg. The higher, even highest elevation of the area is Odenberg, 1250 ft above sea level. There, as legend has it, Charlemagne is supposed to be locked in with his entire army and only able to come out every once in a while. Countless treasures are supposed to be hidden there and you only rarely get the chance to admire them. You have to find the magic blue flower, the key to the entrance. Maybe you will be able to find the key!
In case you don't, enjoy the botanical variety at Odenberg hill. Hike up to the Odenbergturm that towers above the tree tops
offering a wonderful view over the Chattenland region. From there, you will see Scharfenstein hill close by. A giant is supposed to have thrown it there millennia ago. Under this wild and jagged rock, precious treasures are said to be hidden which are guarded by a beautiful virgin with golden hair. Anyone winning this beautiful woman by redeeming her from her spell will be the owner of the treasure. She only comes out of the hill every seven years in order to comb her golden hair. She will sneeze 7 times! Observers are supposed to say ‘Helfgott' [may God help you] instead of ‘Gesundheit' [bless you] as we are wont to say today. You absolutely must remember this in case you should be there just at the right time!
Gudensberg is a cosy little town. Behind the newly-constructed pedestrian zone, the old town built in the half-timbered style has been preserved. The infrastructure is good, providing a high-quality life. The former synagogue has been transformed into a cultural centre known far beyond the city limits; in addition to the permanent exhibition, it offers cultural highlights ranging from concerts to cabaret shows and readings.
