Göttingen

Deutsche Märchenstraße e.V.

Fanstadt goettingentastic things:

The university town of Göttingen is located in southern Lower Saxony, between the Harz Mountains and the Weser River. The first documented citation was in 953; in 1210 Göttingen received its town charter and flourished as a member of the Hanseatic League. Founded in 1734, the Georg-August University, whose prestige is enhanced by over 40 Nobel laureates, comprises 14 schools and has about 24,000 students.
Göttingen has rich cultural and educational offerings; its theatres, orchestras, museums, galleries and large-scale cultural events are in demand far beyond the city limits. The portly medieval town hall in the centre of the old town and the market fountain with the figure of the Gänseliesl, the ‘most-kissed girl in the world', splendid churches and richly adorned half-timbered houses in the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque style still give this large modern town a flair of medieval times and Hanseatic grandeur.

Enchanting Places:

In the years 1829 to 1837, brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm taught at this renowned university. In 1837, together with five other professors (the ‘Göttingen Seven'), they protested against the abrogation of the Hannover constitution by King Ernst August of Hannover. Consequently, they were removed from their posts and Jacob was even expelled from the country. gaenselliesel
