District of Holzminden
Fantastic things:
The Weser's Renaissance castles in Bevern, Fürstenberg and Hehlen and the cloisters at Amelungsborn and Buchhagen are cultural landmarks, as is the castle Homburg near Stadtoldendorf or the birthplace of novelist Wilhelm Raabe in Eschershausen. Fürstenberg presents yet another facet of cultural development with its fine porcelain museum, the only one in northern Germany.
The glass museums in Boffzen und Grünenplan show the region's involvement and trace the industry's development from classical handcraft to mass production. The Münchhausen Museum in Bodenwerder and the Wilhelm Raabe Museum in Eschershausen reveal biographies of their famous residents. For nature lovers, the Waldmuseum in Neuhaus is recommended. Earlier the village of Heinsen depended upon transportation. There you'll find the Schifffahrtsmuseum devoted to ships and navigation. ![]()
Friends of art will take profound pleasure in the "Gravener triptych": the altarpiece portrays scenes from the life of Christ with moving sensitivity.
A small solar-powered ferry provides river crossings between Grave, Dölme and Reileifzen. The quiet ride matches the tranquillity along the riverbanks and many riders wish they could stay aboard longer.
The townspeople in tiny Ottenstein won a national completion for enhancing their village. Not only concerned with the environment, they have set a mark in the use of alternative energy: a mill for canola oil (rapeseed) has started operation here.
Spacious courtyards are a typical feature of the castles at Bevern und Fürstenberg. These wondrous settings lend a magical atmosphere to many sorts of open-air performances, from classical Shakespearean theatre to casual jazz sessions to fairy tale festivals. Outdoor productions can also be enjoyed on Burg Polle and the Münchhausen musical in Bodenwerder is a special attraction.
In Holzminden's Stadthalle, first-class performances and events are arranged by the town's cultural society. There are symphony concerts and theatre productions year round, and the programme includes cultural events especially for children and families. The local art and culture society in Stadtoldendorf and Kultini in Bodenwerder also offer concerts and other cultural events.
International flair adds a special excitment to celebrations every two years in Holzminden during Whitsuntide, traditionally a highlight, the International Street Theatre Festival attracts tens of thousands from all over Europe to the district.
Enchanting places:
Cinderella is at home amidst the ruins of the old fortified castle once occupied by the Landgrave von Everstein in Polle. Many of us are familiar with Baron von Münchhausen as a literary figure, but few know that Münchhausen was born in Bodenwerder on May 11, 1720. Step back in time on a relaxing summer evening: this enchanted world is yours to experience.
Two multimedia productions, Nächtliches Schlosserleben ("Nights at the Castle") and Die Sagen-Nacht ("Legendary Nights")
play on alternate Saturdays at nightfall during the summer months in the castle courtyard at Bevin.
