Bovenden - Burg Plesse

The massive Burg Plesse rises high above the village of Bovenden.

First documented in1015, it is recognised as one of the most important mountain fortresses in the south of Lower Saxony. Burg Plesse was constructed on a cliff of light-coloured shell limestone, thus its name, which means pale. Its main tower is 23 m tall and originally, entry was only possible over a rampart 10 m high. The tower's protective walls are up to 4 m thick. The well, today filled, had been dug deep into the cliffs. According to legend, there was a subterranean passage from this well to the source of Maria's spring. In fact, there really was a passage described in records of 1802. A tunnel's entrance was discovered in Eddigehausen, which lies lower on the mountainside, and this tunnel linked the Burg to the cellar of an ordinary house in the village.
